Don't Buy Every Cute Pet You See Support Group

Does anyone else have "saving the helpless animals" dreams?
The other night I dreamed that the bf and I were driving along, doodedoo, and then notice a puppy at the side of the road. So we stopped to rescue the poor helpless puppy. Then it turned out to be two puppies. And then later, inexplicably, one of the puppies became a goat. But it was a reaaaaly cute baby goat!

Somehow, all my 'saving the poor helpless rats' dreams tapered off when I actually adopted my sweetlings, so obviously what this apartment needs is a goat! ;9

I Resisted!! [Jan. 27th, 2006|04:25 pm]

[Current Mood |accomplishedaccomplished]

Okay, I went back into PetSmart today to see if they were still hiring (I had to miss the group interview on Tuesday because of my other job), and they weren't. However, I just couldn't resist the small animal's section. It's like it was calling to me saying "Come here! Look at us! We're cute!".

And boy were they cute! One little rattie imparticular caught my eye. She was a mismarked dumbo girl, and she wasn't jittery at all when I approached the cage. In fact, she came up to the side and stared at me!!! Ugh! She was adorable, looked like my Caprica (except for the ears), and seemed very tame and friendly for a pet store rat. I seriously had to get all my strength to not adopt her, especially after I lost yet another breeder rat I'd been planning on adopting this week (for those of you keeping track, that's now TWO breeder ratties I've lost at last minute)! My head kept going "you're planning for two, but you're only gettting one! You can get this girl and get her through her quarantine before the other girl comes home and needs to go through quarantine! It's perfect!". However, I'm having issues with one of my girls and lumps (not tumors, thank goodness!), and she's having surgery next week, and I know I'll be too distracted by her to pay enough attention to a new rattie right now AND I've sworn to myself NO MORE PET STORE RATTIES unless I can afford to spay them right away... which I can't right now.

BUT! It was a good thing that I went over there! While I was there I saw a russian dwarf hamster start fighting with a littler hammy. I've had dwarfs who lived together before, and know what good and bad fighting is. This started out as good fighting, but then it turned to bad fighting. The big one was clearly targetting the runt, and I know that's not good! Then I saw that the runt had a bloody foot and it looked like she was missing a toe. I flagged down the smanimals girl, and she removed her immidiately. It then took everything I had in me not to say "I'll take her!".

So, yes, I came home feeling a bit empty without a pet, but knowing I was doing the right thing! So, yay for me!

How are you all doing this week??

So I've been working at Petsmart for coming on a month and it's HORRIBLE. Not how you might imagine, all the animals are so well taken care of and it's a great place to work but... SO MANY HOMELESS ANIMALS. Since I've worked there I've only acquired two new pets. A guinea pig, another female, Cappy, to be friends with my lone female, Pumpernickel, which is totally warranted, I had the room and it's not like 1 is much different from 2. BUT! Yesterday I was talking to an adoption counselor at my work. There was a lovely siamese curled up in a ball and I pointed him out, just saying I liked him. THEN! He tells me, the cat is 6 years old and cats older than 5 are considered "senior". His adoption fee would be free if I wanted to take him home. Cut to me texting my boyfriend he agrees. Ra is an AWESOME cat. He just turned six. He is a beautiful siamese and he doesn't pick on my dogs, he is even acting like he wants to befriend them [my dogs are both smaller than him]. He slept ontop of my boyfriend last night, woke up with him, used the litter box and got back in bed with my boyfriend and I. He is so chill and he is sleeping in my closet right now and he's really a fantastic cat. I feel guilty everyimte I bring home a new animal but I have to remind myself that all my animals live in clean cages [for those of them that do live in cages], that are plenty large if not excessively. They are well fed and happy. I have no debt but would be willing to go into it with my handydandy animal emergency credit card if someone had vet bills I couldn't afford out of my own pocket. Granted, I probably should not get anymore pets. But I hate feeling guilty about giving animals what I feel to be a really great life.

To, or Not To? [Jan. 23rd, 2006|12:05 pm]

So I have a dilemma.

I had planned on getting two new ratties around Christmas time. This was planned long ago, I budgeted for them, and I got a larger cage for them and my four current girls. Everything was fine and dandy, and going as planned until just last night...

The Rest Of The StoryCollapse )

Hello! [Jan. 23rd, 2006|07:55 pm]

[Current Mood |contemplativecontemplative]

As everyone else is introducing themselves I thought I better to!  I have 4 cats, 6 goldfish, 2 gerbils and a hamster.

The cats started off with a 7 week old tabby cat called Storm who I got off the lady round the corner whos cat had kittens because she couldn't be bothered getting it spayed.  A few months later Storm was joined by a black cat, Jet from the Cats Protection League, he had been dumped on their doorstep in a box with 35 other cats.  Then I started volunteering at my local animal sanctuary and got James, who I renamed to Jazzpurr (black) - he had been at the sanctuary for over a year and had been rehomed several times but always brought back - now I know why, he has the odd seizure, pee's in odd places, constantly has the cold and spooks at everything - but I love him.  Then 3 or so months ago when I was up at the sanctuary I ended up coming home with a 9 week old female (tabby), they had no room for her so I was meant to be fostering her - oops she appears to be staying.

The goldfish - Goldie, Sarah, Leroy, Mike (who only has one eye), Felicity and Fiona I have had for about 2 years.  The gerbils, Thunder and Sable for about a year and a half and Ben the long haired syrian hamster for 16 months.

Behold the gang! (lots of pictures)Collapse )

hello all! [Jan. 23rd, 2006|08:46 am]

Semi-obligatory introduction post here. I don't have nearly as many pets as most of you, but for my house (small!) and compared to other times in my life, the cats are the most pets I've ever had at once. Only three, but three very interesting little furballs. :-p

I find myself weakened when the humane society sets up a table at the pet store or mall, just like a lot of you, too. That is where our newest came from. You go to the mall once in a blue moon and end up with a new cat. Hee.

my girlfriend and i admit it all the time. we have ridiculous numbers of animals. we can afford it, yes, but we've got to stop. it's so hard to say no though! right now the house we live in has tons of stray cats living around it, so we're going to set up a trap and release program so we can at least get most of the cats fixed and cut down on the population. for us, cats are our weakness. the petstore we buy all our pet food at always has tons of rescue cats up for adoption, and not adopting them always breaks our hearts.

Hello again to all of you, especially the rat owners.

I thought I'd just take this moment and bring the community rateyourratty to your attention. It's strictly rat-related, but other animal owners, do not fret! There are sister communities for guinea pigs, mice, hamsters and cats and dogs. I think there are rabbit and ferret ones too, but don't quote me on that. Anyway! In the rateyourratty community, you share pictures of your little babies with others via theme weeks where someone chooses a theme and everyone submits a picture, plus through random, off-topic posts just to boast the ratty with the most! It's a lot of fun and no one has ever been rejected from the community i.e. all rats are first place rated! Check it out. It's a lot of fun and we're always looking for new, happy members to join us.

I dont ever buy from petstores, and i KNOW i cant care for a dog right now as im still in college, and all that. but i cant wait until i can have my OWN dog. (pugs, great danes and pits for me) but sometimes, especially fromKill shelters, there is one in connecticut where they take dogs for 8 days and then they are killed, it is hard not to help :-/. you just do what you can do, i guess

anyways this is a great comm! i know ill find it helpful :) hehe
